Report from the study visit of SIFA Day Centre staff to Barka Poland.
In early October, we visited the Barka Foundation, based in Poznan, Poland and also the surrounding villages. Barka is a non-governmental organisation that has developed a network of independent and community rehabilitation centres for people who are socially excluded or suffering from alcohol addiction; they are offered a place to stay and work towards social reintegration by being involved in all aspects of life in the immediate community house. Barka has also created a model system for social integration programmes – practical “get back to work” schemes for the long- term unemployed and a social enterprise model that provides alternatives to the general job market pathway towards employment. They also work towards community integration by establishing working connections between local agencies in order to discover more effective solutions for local social issues. Outside of Poland, Barka also work towards the repatriation and rehabilitation of those who did not succeed as emigrants, including people affected by homelessness and substance misuse(…)
